Overview

Trash Panda is a food scanning app that Slytrunk owns end to end. Scan a barcode and it reads the label so you don't have to. Slytrunk designed it, built it, launched it, and still runs it - no client brief, no outside capital. We're writing it up because it's the clearest evidence of what this team does.

Trash Panda is a food scanning app that Slytrunk owns end to end. Scan a barcode and it reads the label so you don't have to. Slytrunk designed it, built it, launched it, and still runs it: product, brand, native iOS and Android apps, a web app, the ingredient database, the content, and growth. No client brief. No outside capital.

We're writing it up because it's the clearest evidence of what this team does. Plenty of teams can ship an app. Fewer have run one long enough to learn what happens after launch. Fewer still have taken one to the point where it pays for itself.

The challenge

Scan a barcode and Trash Panda reads the ingredient list, then rates the product: Good Choice, OK Choice, or Better Options Available. Beneath the rating it flags individual ingredients across five categories - including anything on your own avoid list - and explains why each one is flagged.

The feature people actually open it for is the swap. Scan something with ten flagged ingredients and the app surfaces comparable products with two or three, so you leave the aisle with an answer instead of a warning.

What we built

Slytrunk defined the product, designed it, and built it - every layer of it.

01 · Product strategy

The scan flow

The scan flow, the three-tier rating, the flag taxonomy, the swap engine, onboarding, and the free-tier boundary - plus continuous experimentation and iteration.

02 · Brand and design

The identity

The identity, the Scout character, the app itself, and the store listings. One significant brand direction was tested in the app store against real download behavior before any engineering time went into it.

03 · Engineering and data

iOS, Android, Web

Native iOS and Android apps, a Next.js web app, authentication, subscription infrastructure, and the analytics stack beneath all of it. The product and ingredient database that makes barcode matching work - and the pipeline that keeps it current - is the hardest part to copy.

Distribution

221 published articles and 219 curated shopping lists across 362 product categories. Organic and paid social, app store optimization, visibility in AI search, and creator partnerships - plus a steady testing habit.

What the results look like

Slytrunk didn't build Trash Panda to be a nice app. It built it to be a profitable business, then iterated on the product until it was one. 700,000+ downloads. Retention at or above the category benchmark on monthly renewal, annual renewal, and share of revenue from annual plans. App store conversion more than doubled on both platforms between December 2025 and May 2026 - up 121% on iOS and 112% on Android. Organic reach up across every channel after shifting the message toward practical grocery guidance. Visible in Google's AI Overviews for queries like "best food scanner app."

Where it stands

Building an app is a project. Getting one to fund itself is a business.

A profitable consumer subscription product, funded from Slytrunk's own balance sheet with no outside capital, now covering its costs.

Free to download on the App Store and Google Play; web at trashpandaapp.com. Covered by the San Diego Business Journal, News12 Connecticut, KUSA-TV, and a number of podcasts.

What a partner is buying isn't a team that can build a product. It's one that has run one, made the mistakes on its own budget, and knows which decisions matter before you reach them.
